President Bush Issues Non-Apology for U.S. soldiers desecrating Koran. News headlines incorrectly reported that Bush “apologized” to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for U.S. sniper using the Koran as target practice. In fact, as White House press secretary Dana Perino said, “He apologized for that in the sense that he said that we take it very seriously. We wanted them to know that the president knew that this was wrong.” Is “we take this seriously” the same as “I’m sorry”? That’s the best the Islamic clerics get from America’s born-again Christian leader. So if you do something wrong, like accidentally burn your neighbor’s house, the appropriate response is not “I’m sorry,” but instead, “I take this seriously.”
